In my girlhood, there was a time where I felt hard to laugh and breathe.
That’s when I moved to Kamakura.
Salty air, stream of fireflies, rice cracker at Komachi-dori, tourists filling mouth with pancakes, birds trying to steal, sound of Higurashi, and evening calm – touching, feeling and hearing all, I felt relieved and finally took a deep breath.
This movie is set in Kamakura and follows a story that three sisters abandoned by father and their half-sister Suzu getting share hearts as a family after their father’s death.
We are living in a world or society where people tend to judge their surroundings based on good or bad, prejudice and customary values. Director Koreeda, however, does not deny person but depicts how they spin the family ties from the affectionate perspective thinking of the mind of each character.
Sisters start to feel closer to father through thirteen-year-old Suzu, even though they have had discontent with him. Suzu, feeling such elder sisters and those around her, gradually opens her mind. This reminds me of myself from a long time ago, and touches my heart.
Hot summer has come this year.
Wind, skyscape, ripples, evening shower, petrichor..
Thinking of the moment in that town, I imagine happiness of the four sisters.
